Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water. No wait, wrong reference! I bet you didn’t know there was such a thing as Random Acts of Poetry Day. Further still, I’ll bet you didn’t know that I DIDN’T know it was Random Acts of Poetry Day and on that point you would be right. But, here I am, because the idea of Random and Poetry in the same sentence makes me giddy in ways that most likely are wrong. Either way, I am here to tell you that you need poetry in your life today…and that poetry and especially random poetry have the power to satisfy your soul in unexpected moments and unlikely places. I know this…
…that a few words, scribbled on paper can take a take fear out of a heart, instruct the course of a day, change a life. It has done all that and more for me. I’m no Poet Laureate but words tumble out of me, and I encroach on eternity’s ground– am lifted to heavenly places, am fierce, can stare down death, or linger over an abyss. Can get through another day without dragging my feet.
What poetry has inspired you in childhood or beyond? As for me, I was not exposed to much poetry when I was young. I am still looking for poets and poems that I love to read!
Meanwhile, I’ll offer up my words…and share them here and everywhere
and leave you also with a dare:
Don’t tell me that you are no poet. Look around, see a word there, another yonder? Grab them, string them together, write them down, tear them up, change them around. You’ve done it.
I woke up at 4:30 AM and the waves were so loud, I had to make my way to the shoreline in the early darkness. I stood gazing out at the sea…and if you want to become poetry stare long into nature and you will become that which you behold! Anyway, I love the ideas to share poetry everywhere, all the time, but especially today, because poetry writing is like taking a soul selfie and sending it into the atmosphere.
