What Matters Not
Whatever happens in life
I am a stone by the river
The water flows regardless
and I am unmoved.
Whether I pray or don’t pray,
God’s will be done.
Whether I fret or don’t fret,
God’s will be done.
Whether I live or don’t live,
God’s will be done.
Whether I cry or don’t cry,
God’s will be done.
Whether I give or don’t give,
God’s will be done.
Whether I lie or don’t lie,
God’s will be done.
Whether I love or don’t love,
God’s will be done.
Whether I try or don’t try,
God’s will be done.
Whether I care or don’t care,
God’s will be done.
Whether I’m found or not found,
God’s will be done.
Whether life’s fair or not fair,
God’s will be done.
Whatever happens in life
I am a stone by the river
The water flows regardless
and I am unmoved.
This poem is dedicated to the memory of Linda Bishop.
God Knows Where I Am
Premieres Monday, October 15 at 10 p.m. on PBS (check local listings)
Streams beginning October 16 on pbs.org and PBS apps.
If you have not yet watched the documentary God Knows Where I Am, I highly recommend you do. I was moved to write two poems this week in response to what I learned about the life of this woman and her family as they struggled to help her despite resistance and lack of support.
These poems are my own personal poetic expression and I have no affiliation with the family, filmmakers or PBS but just wanted to share this incredibly timely and poignant film. I hope you will take the time to watch the film, and reflect on it.
This first poem I wrote after hearing about the story on Megyn Kelly’s broadcast Monday. Friday I will share the second poem I wrote after purchasing and watching the documentary which I missed watching Monday night when it originally aired on PBS. I hope you will join me on my journey!
