The Great Hymns: Blessed Assurance {Faith Life Preservers-Day 8}

Credit

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly
as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,
and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16

I remember as a new believer, walking into a small church
and singing Hymns from a Hymnal.
I did not understand the words, but because of the solid theology
that was written within these great worship songs,
seeds were planted in my heart and soul.
I was not always comfortable and I did not get it,
all these songs about the blood of the lamb.

Years later and after having read both the Old and New Testament,
I began to appreciate the beauty and depth found in these great songs of faith.

I began to have less appreciation for some of the songs presented in various congregations which seemed to be more chanting words over and over again or sounding like the music I listened to before coming to a saving knowledge of God.

I was gifted by a sweet sister in the Lord my very own Hymnal one day.
I adored it, and read it. I am not the best singer but I do love my words!
I enjoyed seeing the names of those who wrote them, and the scripture behind the words that were sung during the services I attended.

I absolutely believe that the great Hymns are Faith Life Preservers!
They remind me of the riches I have in Christ, they exalt the One True Living God,
and they glorify His name and the history of His namesake.

Although I could not find Blessed Assurance in the Hymnal I have, it is a favorite
of mine written by Fanny Crosby,
who has written many beautiful Hymns in her lifetime.

Do you have a favorite Hymn?

  1. Blessed Assurance, Amazing Grace, How Great Thou ARt, Great is Thy Faithfulness, It Is Well With My Soul, Victory in Jesus…I love them all. I am a hymn singer from way back and thrill to sounds of these songs sung from the heart, in harmony, with great depth of feeling…VICTORY in JESUS! yES!!! Great IS Thy Faithfulness!!! Yes! Blessed Assurance, JESUS IS MINE!!! YES!!! I like to sing some of the choruses in between the hymns, but I greatly dislike not being able to sing the hymns anymore. I try to go along with the chorus praise songs and sing them with spirit and depth, but they can never take the place of singing these old songs of the faith with a congregation of people who love them like I do. I do miss that.

  2. You are so right! I think a lot of churches steer away from hymns. There is so much depth to hymns, like you said, and I wish more people would see that. “It Is Well With My Soul” is my favorite!!

  3. Although I love many of the more current songs sung today in churches, I LOVE many of the old hymns. The words have such meaning. In Bible Study Fellowship they sing only the old hymns and sing all the verses. The hymns are chosen each week based on the Bible lessons learned. Blessings and love,Debbie
