A Poem for National Poetry Month

Well here we are April 1, 2026 and the 30th anniversary of National Poetry Month. I’m making no promises outright, or out loud, but it just so happens, I’ve got a few words to kick off the new month. I hope this poem beings you a smile. Or maybe inspires you to pick up your own pen and write something. Anything really. I am not sure this one is done, it’s fresh from the page so might need more work. But, life is short. And tomorrow’s another poem…day!

A Season of Purple

Allergic to scrolling
I am, preferring

breezing my cheeks
with morning’s first
breaths, laughing

under a lavender sky
face first into the dawn
finding my own pace

finally; if I ask why—
it’s not to google

but to the one painting
pansies, and lilacs, who carpets
the ground with phlox

who places purple in
obscure places everywhere.

Thank you for being here. April is #NationalPoetryMonth and if you have never tried, it’s a great time to try now! If you scratch out a poem today, let me know! I’ll be scribbling along all month. Let’s see what happens? You never know where the end of your pen will lead you.

Head to the American Academy of Poets for more.

Happy writing!

Enthusiastically, Dawn
