Welcome to Summer Journal!
This is Day 5 of 21 days of creative prompts to support your writing heart this Summer. If you are new to Enthusiastically, Dawn, you can learn more here: About Me. To find out what we are up to here for June and July, head over to this page: SUMMER JOURNAL 2025– this is where you can find all the details AND the previous posts/prompts.
There is nothing like a Summer morning for getting our RELAX mindset going. Here in New England, once school’s out, whether you are a student or not, there is a significant shift in the vibe. Can I get an Amen? It’s like we never get away from the rhythm of school days and summer’s lazy haze. Of course it may look different to each one of us how this plays out in real time, depending on our current real-life roles! We may be young or old, college bound, or empty -nesters, late graduates, or returning students, grands or proud grad parents.
Option 1: School Days Past. Take a ride down memory lane. Journal about your school days past by choosing the first memory that is prompted by your mind when you hear the term, “School’s Out”. I confess, that a famous rock anthem from the 7o’s does come to my mind. But if I stay with it, there is more…and so I sit with what comes and begin to write. Now, whatever comes to your mind, set your pen to paper, and I assure you you will be surprised to where it leads.
Option 2: Summer School. The dreaded place one would go, if they did not meet the requirements of the school year. I never had to do it, but I had other “summer school” type equivalents. Equally dreadful, whether summer camp (if you did not want to go) or the ADHD class I attended atone summer – UGH! The only girl (painfully 12 years of age) in a class of 12-17 year old boys! A hellish endeavor for sure. I survived, and can laugh now. However you may have some forgotten gems to remember. Good and bad- revisit them, and write to see what the past can show and tell you that might help you today!
Option 3: Summer Learning! Put yourself in Summer School, but this is a school you want to attend. Choose a topic of interest you want to learn more about over the Summer. Something that enriches, and edifies your learning heart. Something that satisfies your soul. Summer can, after all, be a time we are lulled into complacency. Yes we need a time of renewal and recreation. It is good. However, we also can make the most of restful days by focusing on ONE THING to satisfy our learning desire. Explore this idea father by writing or sketching it out.
If you are stuck, springboard off of the following:
- If I could learn to…
- One thing I want to learn this Summer just for me is…
- One thing I want to try this Summer is…
- If I could take a class on anything for Summer 2025, it just might be…
ALTERNATIVELY– Write about your graduation, or any accomplishment you want to reflect on at this moment.
I pray your journaling brings you both discovery, and delight!
Meanwhile, I’ll be singing School’s Out all day and rejoicing that the singer of that song came to know the same Savior I know!
Enthusiastically, Dawn
