SJP2 Childhood Summer Memory Photo

WELCOME! We are working our way through 21 days of creative prompts over the next two months. New to my website? Head here: Who I am. If you need more info about this writing adventure, head over to the Summer Journal PAGE. THANKS for coming!

It’s never too late to jump in, begin right where you are.

Today, I am taking you into the archives of your old photos. You know the ones tucked away in the boxes, fading with the passing years? The random photos also in the corner of a draw- do you have those? How about a scrapbook? Wherever they are, hopefully they are not out of reach.

I send you now on a mini-mission. Find one. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it could be one where the memory is vague. The fun of this one is in the surprising truth that we are terrible rememberers! Ha! Say that three times fast. Any childhood photo will work, as long as you are in it, ideally. Don’t sort through all your photos- you just grab one and go. Save the sorting for another day.

Prompt 2: Childhood Summer Memory Photo

After you find your photo (not ten!). Get your favorite beverage, tuck into a comfy writing area of your choosing and sit with the photo. Let it lead you wherever it leads as you sit quietly with it.

Option One: Describe the details in the picture as best you can recall.

  1. Who is in the picture?
  2. What is happening?
  3. Where is it?
  4. Why? How? Any details here are fun additions, frosting on the cake. Filling in the details.
  5. What is your relationship to the other(s) in the photo?
  6. How old are you in the photo?
  7. Anything unique about this time period in your life that you want to think about or journal further?

Option 2: All about you!

As we turn the focus fully to YOU in the picture. Think about this time period and your age. Springboard off of the following to help, or just write how you see you- in this photo’s time frame. Think about possible likes, dislikes, what does this picture reveal about you- if anything? A picture is worth a thousand words, but you still need to find the words!

At this time in my life I remember feeling…

In this photo I seem to…

This photo makes me think of…

When I see myself in this picture I …

Alternatively:

Make a list of random things about the picture – it can be one word, fragments, or full sentences. But just list everything you see, and even what you don’t see in a word list or word collage. Make it pretty of you desire or keep it simple. Or maybe a short poem? There is no wrong way to journal!

Happy Journaling,

Enthusiastically, Dawn
