Sexism: Alive and Well – Coming to a Place Near You!

sex·ism  (skszm)
1. Discrimination based on gender, especially discrimination against women.
2. Attitudes, conditions, or behaviors that promote stereotyping of social roles based on gender.
sexist adj. & n.

She knew it from the get go.
The initial conversation was promising, she thought they were on the same page and in many ways they were. She excused some of the initial suspicions. She was cautiously optimistic.
It began like a slow swallowing of poison or an elephant in the room that no-one wants to discuss.
Promises were made.
Weaknesses and strengths were discussed.
First, they said she was not meeting up to the standard expected.
What standard was that? Oh, ‘So and so’ did it this way.
So and So being a He.
She accepted the criticisms and adjusted.
But it started to become clear to her… it wasn’t her.
It was her gender.

Maybe it was the way references were repeatedly made about the male in her place prior to her taking the position…

The fact is there was a sad absence of humility in this particular environment.
There was false humility.
The kind that is deceitful and evasive.
The kind of humility that avoids looking you in the eye, because it is not really looking out for your best interest or anyone else’s but only it’s own.

It is everywhere these days.
It parades in the street as freedom of speech and spits at the feet of truth. I have seen it growling and prowling as it demands its rights while devouring the rights of others. I have seen it cunningly position itself to cause division and strife while promoting lies. I have witnessed the robbing of that which is to be earned but is given freely, and never appreciated…at all. Entitlement swings wild and strangles those in it’s path, but takes down many more in the process.

Pride blinds one to truth, beauty and wisdom.
It runs hard and fast and never looks back.
It’s now, and ME first.
I know it well…
because it is like a cancer that is continuously removed from me by my maker.
I know why the caged bird sings, indeed.
Because there is nothing more ugly than those who believe their own lies.

Than those who puff themselves up and convince themselves that their song is the only song that matters. Or maybe those who want to behave in deceitful ways but act as if they are behaving uprightly. There is nothing more ugly than deceit and nothing more beautiful than truth. Sometimes the two meet and set each other free…

As in the response at her departure when she recalled saying, “I feel like you really just want a guy for this position.” To which the reply came, with an affirming nod, “Well, yeah.”

To which I say, sexism is alive and well, and it’s uglier than ever.
Tweet. Tweet.

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
