SJP4 One Word Wonder

SJP4 One Word Wonder

Welcome to Summer Journal. We are working through 21 days of creative prompts to set a sparkle to your summer through the written word, the doodled thought or the sketched moment! If you are new to me, you can learn more here: About Me. To find out what we are up to here for June and July, head over to this page: SUMMER JOURNAL 2025

Otherwise, by all means, please jump in and journal!

Are you one of those people who choose one word at the start of the new year? I am! In case you are unaware, the idea is that instead of making resolutions -which seems to be the same as setting oneself up for failure- often…very often, but not always, you choose a word to walk with though the year. The word serves one in ways a resolution cannot. It’s less of a relentless taskmaster and more like a cheerleader. The word you choose (or which chooses you) can be a powerful, and precious influence throughout your whole year. As a Christian, I pray and ask God to guide me to the word which will best suit what He wants to teach me each year. This truly has been a lifechanging and fruitful endeavor. It has certainly been a better tool in the hands of my Maker than my endless list of resolutions! What if we allow the practice of choosing one word to oversee our Summer? What if, instead of bucket lists, we allow the wisdom of one word (even The Word) to be our default for summer days? Let’s ponder it!

Option 1: Part 1: Choose either one, two or three words for the Summer. One word for your Summer, or one for each month (June, July, August) or choose for just two months, if you prefer. Think of your one word as your assistant to help maximize decisions pertaining how you spend your time. Ideally the word, is a kind of magnet to optimal choices. For instance say you want to prioritize renewal for the Summer, your word helps you ask if your choices are aligning well with that goal. Perhaps I want to focus on strengthening my marriage, or friendships over the course of June, I can choose a word that guides me to that focus. Give it a try, think about what you most need from your Summer days and maximize making the most of them, by choosing your word(s) wisely! Part 2: Brainstorm, doodle or make a mind collage with your word or words, and all the ways it points to your best Summer yet.

Option 2: Respond to the one word Seagull or the more scientific term, Gull. However, having an affinity to the gulls by the beach, I prefer to call them as I do: seagulls. Respond with poetry, a story, a sketch, or describe the seagull memory that pops into your mind as you ponder this sea -faring bird. What do seagulls bring to you mind? Don’t tell it, but write it in your journal!

Option 3: For those who have a WORD for the year, how about journaling a mid-year (almost) check -in? (I am adding this after posting- I meant to make this one of the prompts but forgot- so you are not crazy if you came back after reading to discover an option 3!

I hope you enjoy your journaling today!

Enthusiastically, Dawn
