Discover (Day 8)

Discover (Day 8)

One of the things I love most about writing, is the discovery I have come to accept as common to my journal writing practice. When I say it’s common, I don’t mean ordinary. No, quite the opposite. What keeps me journaling year after year, is the possibility of discovering something new about myself, others, God, life and living by just showing up with my pen and notebook. So what I mean, is , it’s no surprise to me that journaling brings discovery.

Hence me writing the book Journaling for Discovery and Delight.

In essence, the book was a series of prompts just like this! My ever inquisitive mind is always seeking a new adventure. I love to learn about people, places and things. Living in the information age can be exhausting, so I continue to balance my desire for knowledge with solid Biblical wisdom and thinking. Otherwise, I would be overwhemed and discouraged most of the time. I limit my intake of news, and am blessed to have given up most social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X). These choices continue to help me hear myself and God’s still small voice within clearly. With less competition from a plethora of too many voices (even good ones can sometimes keep one from clearly hearing well) speaking into my brain, what matters becomes much easier to identify.

We have to recognize what leads to discovery and delight in our lives, and what leads us to overwhelm and exhaustion.

Prompt 8: Discover

Let’s begin, shall we? Let’s start with writing Three Things.

  1. Write one thing you have discovered about yourself in the last three years.
  2. Write one thing you have discovered about God, or your relationship with God in last three months.
  3. Write one thing you have discovered most recently/or over time (come at it both ways if it helps) that is important to you with regard to relationships, life and living.

OR

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word Discover in the following ways: ‘to make known or visible: expose’ or ‘to obtain sight or knowledge of for the first time : find‘.

Option 1- Expose: write about a time you when you had a personal significant insight that exposed something that was TRUE, but uncomfortable to consider. What did you do with the truth, and how did it/has it changed you?

Option 2- Find: Write about a time you witnessed something in the natural world that was both beautiful and tragic in your perception. Or when you happened across something in the natural world that caused you to consider the deeper things of life, death, truth, reality.

OR

In case you are panicked by these prompts or just not in the mood to wade into deep waters at the moment, this prompt is for you!

  1. Three things that you delight in from your life right now.
  2. Three delightful people you know.
  3. Three things that delight you about God.
  4. Three things you can do to bring delight to another person.

Or

Make a list of things you want to learn about. Set the timer to just 5 minutes for this one. Write as fast as you can and stop when the timer goes off. Choose one from the list to explore in a later journaling session.

LASTLY for my brethren

A Trinitarian Moment: Write three praises EACH to the One True God who reveals Himself as:

  1. God, the Father
  2. God, the Son
  3. God, the Holy Spirit

I hope you discovered a prompt in today’s offerings!

Happy Journaling!

Enthusiastically, Dawn

Loves the idea of 3s. You are so right when you say we write to discover something new. I also found through your prompt that it allowed me to put words to thoughts that I had not been able to express in writing.
