Today, I want to have a word with you who may be trusting in anything apart from the saving, redemptive power and work of Jesus Christ. Today I speak to you who is trusting in self, so subtly and turning from the only one who can save and transform souls. Today I am speaking to the one who is leaning on their own understanding to comprehend the things of God. This you do to your detriment.
If you have ears to hear, read on.
That we should take any credit for goodness is nothing less than mutiny to Jesus Christ. Paul says in Philippians ‘To live is Christ and to die is gain’ – and repeatedly throughout scripture, God’s call to His people is to turn from lifeless idols and return to the only living God. If we read through the books of the Holy Bible we see “time and time again” as the CSB Bible puts it, throughout the history of God’s people there is a bend in humanity toward seeking one’s own way. This is the norm, not the exception. As we read the prophets, we see God extending his hand of wrath, yes, but only after multiple messengers have gone forth speaking His will, abundant in mercy, only to be met, time and time again, with resistance- often to the point of brutality, even to death for those speaking His words. We go to extreme lengths to cling to doing what we want to do, without being accountable to anyone, especially a sovereign, all-seeing, all -knowing, allegiance seeking God, don’t we?
We go to extreme lengths to cling to doing what we want to do, without being accountable to anyone, especially a sovereign, all-seeing, all -knowing, allegiance seeking God, don’t we?
But today we see people deceived into believing in their own goodness. Sadly, I am speaking of and to my own brothers and sisters in the Lord.
Dear Christian, if there is any good in you, apart from Christ, it is but filthy rags before the majesty and holiness of God! Yet, I have seen evidence of this time and time again! If you cannot accept that truth, then you cannot accept God’s word as stated in scripture. Get your eyes off yourself and what you are doing “for Jesus”, Pharisee, and get yourself wholly into the greater work of worship which exalts Christ alone, which sees Him crucified, with poured-out blood, with mouth dry, with body bruised, for you. AND Risen on the third day, for you. FOR YOU! Not because of your niceties, not because of YOUR goodness and kindness. But because you are blind, naked and wretched before a Holy God! He is the one who is kind, generous in mercy, full of lovingkindness. We stand with empty hands, before our Creator.
Until you see yourself as ugly as the beaten, bludgeoned, bleeding Christ who died in your place-for your sinful, prideful, self-righteousness…you see Him not. You see a figment of your imagination. But he was crucified for our transgressions. The Book of Romans says,
He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God. (NLT)
Romans 4:25
We do not serve a fictitious, lifeless god of our own making. We belong to Christ the King. We belong to a God who does not share His power or glory, but through one vehicle alone, His Son, Jesus Christ, the spotless lamb, sacrificed for sinners. The only one who gave His life willingly, who rose again, who lives now, who is coming again, who gives His Spirit to we who bow the knee believing, trusting with certainty-
He is coming soon. Amen.
Today, I say, get your eyes off yourself, get your eyes on the Savior, seek Him, and serve Him according to the purpose He sets before you in the smallest things to the biggest. Seek Him, and be satisfied.
Set your eyes not on the next greatest thing, nor leader. Not on the wars, and tragedies, and sufferings, but set your heart, mind, spirit and soul, solely on Christ. This is God’s will for your, Dear Christian. First and foremost. Apart from this you can do nothing. And sometimes doing nothing with Jesus is better than doing a lot of worldly good that is but a heaping pile of rags in God’s sight. To Him alone be glory.
Lift your eyes, when He is all you see, you will see clearly indeed.
This song comes to mind: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.
