My Bible Stack (with Videos)

This morning I decided to film a video (Part 1 and 2)  about the Bible Stack under my desk. I have such a close relationship with Scripture as it is the vehicle most often used by the Holy Spirit to teach and guide me into timeless truths.

Essentials for Living Well

Moonstone Beach in Charlestown, RI

Moonstone Beach in Charlestown, RI

This morning as I sat down at the kitchen table with coffee, journal, planner and Bible and, I might add, a very busy mind, I felt the need to let the overflow from my head spill onto my journal pages, hoping that my quiet time would be more focused afterward. There is something about releasing the clutter in my mind onto paper that clarifies my vision and focus. As I sat, I began to consider how important this time was to me in the scheme of things. It might not always look the same, this “Quiet Time” but what I realized is there are three (actually four) elements essential for me to confidently and contentedly live out my life with joy, peace, and purpose. These components have carried me through from my younger days until now and continue to give me a sense of well-being, regardless of the circumstances.

A Week’s Worth of Jesus?

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

I am on a journey through the Gospels this Lent Season via Margaret Feinberg’s Lent Challenge. 4 Gospels, 40 days, and here I am wrapping up week 1 and feeling more in love with my Savior than ever before.

See, reading the Bible is not burdensome. But, being a Christian who makes no time for Jesus makes no sense at all to me. You want to feel burdened as a Believer? Ignore God’s Word, don’t pray and tell yourself you are too busy carrying your burdens to spend time with God.

Of course Jesus offers to carry those burdens, but you go just ahead and trudge along carrying them yourself. Friend, that is just foolishness!

If you want to carry your burdens, be my guest but don’t blame God when you’re weary from it.

The thing is we are all busy. We all have the same amount of time in a day. We all have to choose how we will slice up that day according to our priorities. And the bottom line is we get off track. We do. I do and you do. Unless of course you’re a Pharisee….

That’s a whole other blog post.

Rewriting Scripture (Day 6)

One of the most powerful things I have done is to rewrite God’s word into prayers in my journal. I often will write different versions of the same verse as it speaks to me in time. But just as we are taught in school to articulate in our own words something we have read or learned, it can be helpful to apply this to our Scripture reading. It can be an exhilerating and exciting endeavor to rewrite scripture as  we reflect on it prayerfully. The Word of God is living, active and powerful (Hebrews 4:12). God is able to speak to us though His Word. I’m not saying twist the meaning into something it isn’t but instead just allow it to lead you deeper. So often we rush through familiar passages. We don’t savor and allow the words to linger on our palate. But as we taste, we will surely find the Lord’s goodness….
