Grace Upon Grace (2019)

“No one has the time to listen, let alone love.

Is God now pro-exhaustion?

Doesn’t He lead people beside the still waters anymore?

-Richard A. Swenson

I am sharing a poem I wrote in 2015 during Lent as we conclude our first week of Journaling through the Book of John. I grabbed the quotes above from my journal archives, as I re-read a few of my entries in a 5-Year Journal of Lent and Advent I kept between 2005-2010.

Grace Upon Grace

Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:16-17

It’s in the quietness

I hear Him,

as I gaze upon his Word

and read anew the stories

of what’s been seen and heard.

Entrusting himself to no-one,

this Son of God and Son of Man,

but availing himself for many-

according to God’s Mighty Plan.

Grace upon grace

a holy door-

The light of God’s own face

Jesus was more

than Moses then,

when fulfilling the Law-

giving his life

for life to secure.

Let our hearts not harden

to the Chosen One today,

Lamb of God, Messiah-

Jesus is The Way.

I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” John 1:34

I have been continuing to follow the Daily  Liturgical Readings Year C  along with lingering in Johns’ Gospel Chapter 1 this week.

One of the things I did this week that I don’t always do, is to read through the Scripture aloud. It helps me to read through it aloud and silently. I have to tell you, Banjo (our dog) sometimes looks at me funny when I do. I’m not sure if he understands or is just trying to figure out if there is a walk, food or treat in the equation for him.

How did you do with your week in Chapter 1?  Did you catch my mid week post Finding Your Footing for the Journey ?

How can I support you in your faith journey?

I thoroughly enjoyed week 1, Dawn! I read through Chapter one in several different versions of the Bible (NIV … ESV … MSG) and then I listened to J. Vernon McGee’s sermons on the chapter via Through the Bible app. Looking forward to studying and journaling through Chapter two this week 🙂

Thanks for sharing, Molly! I forgot I used to listen to J. Vernon Mcgee on Christian Radio all the time when I drove more. I’ll look into it online- thanks for the reminder!

“Grace upon grace”, our God is most gracious!! Yes, received your midweek post…thanks for tips. Pray that I will “open up” to journal deeper. I like John’s writing style and how John 1 “mirrors” Genesis 1, “In the beginning…” A good place to start!

I know- I just have fireworks in my brain from that – no matter how many times I read , I hear the echo of the OT as I read the NT…it is just so powerful!
