It’s National Poetry Month, and I have made some decisions regarding the direction of my writing as reflected in my reclaimed pen.
My message to you…fight the good fight, fellow pen-holders. Write as if your life depends on it…
For some of us, it is not about recognition, acknowledgment or acceptance. It is for life itself we write.
I write for life. I write to open the eyes, arouse the soul. Not least of all, starting with my own.
This is my revelation, this is my truth.
For what purpose or whom do you write?
The Pen Reclaimed
Today, I decided
I am not what I thought
nor will I be tomorrow,
that which I so passionately sought
Academia boots never fit me at all
Kicking off these confining shoes
heeding the call
that needs not approval from literary rag
or acceptance from any editorial mag
or writers cliques, mentions, and swag.
I hear the drum, beating solo
my ears listen well,
Not sure where, when
or how far I’ll go.
Back to the joy
I once employed
with paper and pen
on which I depend,
for life abundant
and truth to defend.
Unshackled poet, reclaimed,
I write for one,
Freedom is found
only when one
is not afraid to follow
the beat of their own drum.
