The Power of Suggestion

He draws up the water vapor
and then distills it into rain.
The rain pours down from the clouds,
      and everyone benefits.
Job 36:27-28 (NLT)
Grey skies overhead. Threatening clouds open up and pour down dime-sized raindrops, as I stand hooded waiting for the dog to complete his business, in the early morning’s darkness. I return in to our dry abode, my daughter catches me and asks in a disappointing voice, “No snow?” Shaking the wetness off of my coat I reply, “No, but it sure is a good day to snuggle in bed with a book.”
Her bus arrives and carries her off into the drippy day.
Soon, I am off dodging the downpour as I drive
to my weekly mom’s prayer group.
She finds me seated, chatting with a mom, in the little room at the school,
following our prayer time. She peeks through the door’s window.
I motion her in.
“Mom, I’m not feeling well.”
She smiles sheepishly, as she describes her symptoms.
She reminds me that I promised I would check on her,
before I left and she is holding me to it.
My sweet mom friend makes her exit, as I check cheeks,
gaze into the slightly
watery eyes and listen to her breathing.
Somewhat convinced, we make our way to touch base with her teacher
and the front desk.
A couple of planned stops on the way home are made.
A clothing donation and library pickup.
Orange juice is a priority.
An unplanned stop by the Sea Wall to check on the waves
activity in the stormy weather.
We sit listening and watching the waves as they hiss,
curl and race to the shore.
Home at last.
A cup of warm steamy broth for one sniffy girl.
Blankets piled high, a stack of books and one king-sized bed will make for
two, a delightfully unexpected, lazy day.
Apparently, it really was a good day to snuggle in bed with a book.
The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I know what these rainy days are like. They are made just for snuggling in a blanket, afghan or quilt and reading a good mystery or novel. Of course, I would need some hot herbal tea.
